LAKE SARANAC – The sounds of a father and son singing in harmony echoed over the waters of Flower Lake on Tuesday evening as local musician Andy Walkow and his father Bob shared the stage at Saranac Waterfront Lodge, playing guitar together.

Andy plays at the Boathouse restaurant every other Tuesday afternoon, so when Bob, from Erie, Pennsylvania, came to visit and see the grandkids playing sports and singing in the school choir this week, they took the opportunity to play their first public concert together.

The father-son duo have been playing together for years, mostly having fun at home.

Bob taught Andy his first guitar chords. Bob has been playing most of his life.

“I started playing the guitar in 1963 as a shortcut to learning piano chords,” he said. “And then the Beatles came out.”

Suddenly the guitar was the coolest instrument to play.

He always covers Beatles songs.

“My dad played in a Beatles tribute band for longer than the Beatles played,” Andy joked.

Growing up, his father’s friends all played instruments.

“The music has always been there” said Bob.

Andy knows that made him choose the music.

Bob taught him the four basic guitar chords when he found the “Led Zeppelin IV” album. Then he learned the rest on his own.

Initially, he wanted to be a banjo player.

“And get all the ladies,” Andy’s wife, Erin, intervened.

“That’s right. The ladies fainted, Andy said.

Andy’s siblings are also all musicians.

Bob remembers them all playing together at the annual meeting “Friday After Thanksgiving” parties.

“Really Low, Really Fun” he said.

Andy remembers playing at his brother’s graduation party in their backyard in Erie. His brother played the solo for “Down by the river” by Neil Young perfectly.

“But then the police came and shut us down,” Andy said laughing.

On Tuesday, he played Neil Young with his father, as well as Creedence Clearwater Revival, Bob Dylan, The Byrds and James Taylor.

Andy plays at the Boathouse every other Tuesday afternoon, 5-8pm
