Sunn O))) to release full BBC Maida Vale session under the name “Metta, Benevolence”

Sunn O))) have announced a full release of their 2019 session performed at the iconic Maida Vale studios of the BBC, for which they were joined by Swedish Anna Von Hausswolff.

The famous metallurgical drones performed their three-song set – featuring ‘Pyroclasts F’, ‘Pyroclasts C #’ and ‘Troubled Air’ – on Mary Anne Hobbs’ show for BBC Radio 6 Music. At the time, the band was on tour to support their last two albums, “Life Metal” and “Pyroclasts” (both released in 2019).

Hausswolff was the opening act for Sunn O))) on their UK tour and joined the trio – alongside his own tour group – for both tracks “Pyroclasts”. According to Heavy consequence, Hausswolff performed his parts on a Nord C2D synthesizer.

In a statement, Sunn O))) noted that “stepping into the legendary John Peel Studios was stepping into a temple of music and experimentation, of freedom of ideas and sound.”

The session came towards the end of an ambitious touring cycle for ‘Life Metal’ and ‘Pyroclasts’, the material having “updated and evolved” over time, becoming what the group described as the “vast, open and glossy hyper-saturated “. arrangements ”they played at Maida Vale.

“Metta, Benevolence BBC 6Music: Live On The Invitation Of Mary Anne Hobbs” marks the first time that this session will be available in physical or digital form. It originally aired on Hobbs’ show about the Gaelic religious event of Samhain, which runs from the evening of October 31 through November 1.

The record is scheduled for January 22, 2022 via Sunn O)) )’s own label, Southern Lord. It is available for digital pre-order through Bandcamp or on two vinyl records at the group’s online store.
