Simon Cowell once offered songwriter Max Martin a Mercedes in exchange for Britney Spears’ mega hit “…Baby One More Time.”
The 62-year-old music mogul had heard the 1998 song, which the Swedish studio wizard originally wrote for boy band Backstreet Boys and R’n’B group TLC, and tried to bribe Max with a car luxury to hold the rights to the pop classic.
When told it was for a little-known Britney at the time, he remarked that someone with her name would never “get a hit.”
Simon remembers thinking, “God, I gotta have this song.”
He confided on his colleague’s “America’s Got Talent” podcast “Howie Mandel Does Stuff Podcast”: “So I called Max.
“I said, ‘Max. Please, please give me this song. And he went, ‘I promised somebody else.’ And I said, ‘Well, I’ll send you a Mercedes – literally a Mercedes 500 SL if I can get that song.’ And he went, ‘No. I promised someone else. And I went, ‘Who?’ And he went, ‘Britney Spears.’ I went, ‘Max, let me give you some advice. No one will be successful with a name called Britney Spears.
However, it couldn’t have been more wrong, with “…Baby One More Time” topping the charts across the globe and going triple platinum in the UK.
The single is one of the best-selling songs of all time with over 10 million copies sold.
Meanwhile, Britney recently claimed she “probably won’t perform again” because she’s “quite traumatized for life.”
The ‘Toxic’ singer went on a rant about the ‘worst’ experience working with ‘offensive people’ on her live shows in the past, and she suggested she wouldn’t return to the stage because she is “stubborn” and wants to prove her “point”.
In a since-deleted Instagram post, she said: “The most offensive SO CALLED professional photos from each tour. I mean they could have at least cheated and edited them for me…just saying…two days of shooting for a new show in vegas literally the worst ever…and me excited for the photos for five months of touring…they never showed me any.
“I’d rather stop fucking in my pool and take pictures of myself in studios than work with the most offensive people in my life.”
She added: “I’m traumatized enough for life and yes I’m p ***** as f *** and no I probably won’t play anymore just because I’m stubborn and I’ll make my point.”
The 40-year-old pop idol captioned the post: “Kiss my motherfucking f****** a**.”
The “Lucky” singer’s last tour was “The Piece of Me Tour” in 2018.
Britney previously said she had “no idea” if she would perform again.
The “Gimme More” singer has adjusted to her freedom since her long conservatorship ended last year.
