Shop online with Wii Shop Channel music via a new browser add-on

Those who remember the Wii and its digital store – the Wii Shop Channel – remember its catchy music loop. You can now shop music from the Wii Shop Channel online via a new browser add-on.

The new Wii Shop Channel Music expansion is an add-on to Corbin Davenportand it is available either for firefox Where Google Chrome browsers. Once you install the add-on on your browser, if you access your favorite digital hawker, you will be graced with this catchy music loop.

Oddly enough, you can shop online with Wii Shop Channel music when browsing online stores like Amazon, Walmart, and Best Buy, but GameStop doesn’t trigger the music. I started a quest to see what Corbin added to the “stores” list and what didn’t. Ebay also triggers the music, as does Target.

What’s even weirder is that none of the console store-equivalent browsers from PlayStation, Xbox, and even Nintendo trigger the music. You can of course turn on the music quite easily via the add-on’s settings, but it’s supposed to work seamlessly in the background, like browsing the Wii Shop itself.

You can also switch the music that plays in the expansion from the default Wii Shop Channel Music to the excellent music from the DSi Shop, as well as the 3DS eShop and even the Wii U eShop.

It’s a bit sad that the previous generation of handhelds with the 3DS and even Sony’s PlayStation Vita stocked themed music, but the Switch currently doesn’t. Perhaps the centuries-old tradition of play cheap background music to encourage you to buy things as shopping in Japan comes to an end.

Davenport noted that he wanted to add more features to the extension, but was pretty happy with it for now – maybe we’ll add more digital stores to the list to make online shopping a little less depressing in our corporate dystopia.

It’s niche culture. In this column, we regularly cover anime, geek culture, and things related to video games. Please leave your comments and let us know if there is anything you want us to cover!
