The Pandora Papers tax leak has involved several celebrities including Shakira, Elton John, Julio Iglesias, Swedish House Mafia and others.

The massive leak of private financial documents was published this weekend by several news outlets. The Pandora Papers would tie world leaders and the global elite to complex offshore accounting and tax evasion. British and Australian authorities have confirmed that they will analyze documents published by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ).

The data dump includes over 11.9 million records for some of the richest and most famous in the world. ICIJ journalists allege that Shakira, Elton John and Ringo Starr set up post office box companies in tax havens like the British Virgin Islands or the Bahamas to hide money from the tax authorities in their respective countries. Shakira is already facing a possible tax fraud case in Spain after a Spanish judge recommended that she stand trial for non-payment of taxes on income earned between 2012 and 2014.

The Swedish House Mafia dance group is also nominated by the Pandora Papers for setting up an offshore company in the British Virgin Islands.

The group gave the company (SHM Holdings Ltd.) ownership of the group’s name, logo and music. The plan was to name the company Swedish House Mafia Ltd., but officials denied using the word “Mafia” as an acceptable company name.

A spokesperson for Swedish House Mafia has confirmed the existence of the company. But they claim the deal was terminated in 2013. “[There were] question marks as to whether the construction could be seen as a means, so to speak, of concealing assets, which could come at the expense of the SHM brand, ”the spokesperson said in an e- mail.

In 2013, Swedish House Mafia ranked fourth on Forbes’ list of the world’s highest paid DJs. The group split that year but reunited in 2018 and will release their debut studio album later that year. “The purpose of the company was not to evade taxes,” a SHM spokesperson told SVT, a Swedish broadcaster reporting the Pandora Papers leak.
