Neil Peart’s isolated drums for Rush’s song “Natural Science”

You don’t get a nickname like “The Professor” without knowing your stuff, and Rush’s percussionist Neil Peart certainly knew how to get by with a really bulky kit. One of the undisputed icons of the instrument, aside from being considered one of the best, what Peart couldn’t do with his drumsticks in hand was not worth trying. Below, we revisit one of his memorable moments with the isolated drum track from Rush’s song ‘Natural Science’.

With a career spanning over four decades and 19 studio albums, Peart’s time with the band has been considerable. Although he is considered one of the most technically proficient rock drummers, he also flourished in the limelight. Below we not only have the isolated drum track for ‘Natural Science’, but also some rare drum camera footage of Peart performing the song live.

Sadly passing away in 2020, Neil Peart’s precision and power will always be at the forefront of his legacy. Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl paid tribute, saying, “An inspiration to millions of people with a unique sound that has spawned generations of musicians (like me) to take two drumsticks and pursue a dream. A kind, thoughtful and brilliant man who reigned over our radios and turntables not only with his percussions but also his beautiful words.

“I still vividly remember my first listening to ‘2112’ when I was young. It was the first time I really listened to a drummer. And since that day the music has never been the same. . His power, precision and composition were second to none. He was called “the professor” for a reason: we all learned from him. “

Part of what Grohl says can be found in ‘Natural Sciences’. Of course, the song is written by Peart, taken from his previous attempts to make an epic song around the tale of Sir Gauvain and the Green Knight, so it is sprinkled with the wonderful lyricism with which it has been blessed. But it’s also imbued with Peart’s unique timing, using weird 7/8, 6/8, and 3/4 time signatures that would leave most percussionists bewildered.

Peart, however, not only keeps his cool in the face of such a myriad of musical cards, but goes through every journey with assured confidence. It is a mark of his stature as a professional musician and performer that during such a song he can not only deliver every note but do so with a bit of arrogance in his walk.
