Mary, the daughter of Leslie and Violet (McNeer) Quinn, was born on September 9, 1937 in St. Mary’s. She grew up in Colfax and graduated from Colfax High School in 1956. She then moved to Newton. On April 30, 1971, Mary married Conrad Horstman. They make their home in the countryside of Monroe. Mary was a housewife raising their three children, Kelly, Kevin and Meggan. She was also busy doing ceramics, gardening, baking, cooking and sewing. After Conrad’s death in 1983, Mary and the children returned to Newton. Mary’s Catholic faith has always been a constant comfort to her. She was very active at the Catholic Church of the Sacred Heart, where she raised her children and attended the Mary Martha Circle.
After her children were older, Mary returned to work and worked at Diamond Crystal and Warren’s Frozen Food, where she was going to retire. After her retirement, she worked part time in the fabric department at Wal-Mart. In her 60s, Mary generously donated a kidney to her good friend, Jane Tuffin, extending her life by 10 years. Mary enjoyed spending time at the Jasper County Senior Citizens Center. She was also very proud of her Irish heritage.
