Lewes Youth Rock Orchestra promises major outlet

LYRO is run by parent James Lambeth and grandparent Tig Savage. James is a professional musician and Tig is a former singer and education officer at the museum.

Tig said, “We’ve all struggled in many ways, including emotionally over the past 18 months, but maybe the kids need some extra attention right now. When they bring their children back to school, parents’ thoughts also turn to extracurricular activities.

“While a good kick is a great way to let off steam, not all kids are athletic. However, all children need an outlet. LYRO aims to provide this through music and teamwork. (At the Lewes Youth Rock Orchestra), as family oriented people, there is a clear commitment to keeping children healthy and happy. We also believe that music should be fun and accessible. LYRO offers the added support of playing as an integrated ensemble, a rock band, to further promote teamwork and social skills; problem solving; mutual respect; learn to listen to each other and to work together. Playing an instrument, singing and performing are all involved in positive personal development, stress management, emotional processing and more.

“New scientific studies suggest that for adults, playing regularly at a high level is also involved in the prevention of dementia and we already know that music therapy is good for the mind, spirit and soul.

“If this is the case with adults, what remarkable reinforcement and promotion does playing an instrument or singing provide for the developing brain?”

“Some children will develop positively on the football field, in the swimming pool or with their pets,

“Some will actively attack their siblings and / or parents and other caregivers; and some will internalize their emotional response to the pandemic and all that has come from it.

“Music has always been an important and useful tool of expression, but today it is more necessary than ever. Lewes is fortunate to have a great long-standing youth music project, forming groups of more traditional size. Now Lewes will benefit from having the bands and an entire orchestra, offering more of a youth club feel, including musical games, fun music lessons, and social and team building exercises.

LYRO is based at All Saints Center, Lewes.
