Jackson music store says goodbye after 46 years

JACKSON, Mich. (WLNS) — For nearly 50 years, Playford Music and Sound has helped bring music to life. Now, that chapter is coming to an end, but its instrumental impact will continue.

“It’s really for lack of a better term, it’s almost like a home away from home,” Jackson College music director Dan Bickel said.

Bickel grew up in this store. This is where the seed of his love for music grew through Craig Playford. He devoted his life to running the store and inspiring the next generation of musicians.

“Just kind of give me a place to belong. I think that’s the biggest thing is that he jokingly calls me one of his boys. He’s got like five of us who went through in his career that we were basically adopted by Craig.

Playford has struggled with health issues. He recently put him in the hospital. He told 6 News that he will be fine, like the years he worked to keep this store running, he is a fighter.

Along the same lines, others who have been through the store from the very start say his legacy will be Playford’s legacy.

“A person who cared, who was fair, who pushed hard, who wanted to do anything to make others outside of himself better,” said Michigan Theater executive director Steve Tucker.

The last day should be Saturday, May 28. Bickel says he will miss the friendships and the kids will arrive eager to learn more about the power of music.

“I think it’s really just that center of the musical universe for a lot of us that, we’re going to miss you,” Bickel said.
