Investigation underway after woman used sledgehammer to steal thousands of dollars worth of items from Newton store – Boston News, Weather, Sports

NEWTON, MASS. (WHDH) – Police are investigating after a woman was caught on camera stealing thousands of dollars worth of merchandise from the Newton TJ Maxx over the weekend.

As the woman rushed out of the store, an employee ran after her. We then see the suspect put her hand in the pocket of her sweatshirt, take out a mass and spray the employee in pursuit.

Prior to the robbery at the TJ Maxx, the suspect wearing the gray sweatshirt was seen under surveillance choosing expensive hoodies and bags. Although the theft was a loss for the store, police said chasing down a suspect was not worth the consequences.

“The way you should get involved is to be our eyes and ears because it was just mace used this time it could have been another instrument or another type of weapon that could be more lethal “said Lt. Bruce Apotheker.

Investigators were called to the Needham Street store on Sunday and said an attack of this nature was alarming.

Earlier this month, two people used the mace to steal items from a local CVS.

Police said the two incidents did not appear to be related.

Anyone with information regarding these two incidents is asked to call the police.
