Enter the Schaffer Library and you will likely spot the familiar face of John Myers. An Associate Librarian who oversees the Catalog and Metadata Unit, Myers joined the Union in 2001. He is responsible for the management of records that describe and provide access to the physical resources of the library. He also performs all the cataloging of rare books in the archives and special collections of the library. This gave him the opportunity to discover such treasures as George Washington’s hair, 17th-century manuscript music, and 19th-century Bible translations into various Asian languages. At home, he likes to spend time with his cat, his garden and his husband, not necessarily in that order.
FIRST APPLICATION YOU WATCH IN THE MORNING:
I would have liked to have had a more edifying answer, but Facebook, alas.
A BOOK YOU HAVE READ MANY TIMES:
For many years, I have read the entire Lord of the Rings trilogy on an annual basis. I think it was an easier vacation than navigating a “real” getaway. Who needs a travel agent when an entire continent is at your fingertips on the library?
BEST TIP YOU EVER RECEIVED:
Not always easy to follow but, “Do you want to be right, or do you want to be happy?”
PREFERRED LOCATION ON CAMPUS:
I don’t go there often enough, but Jackson’s Garden. It’s amazing that we have this oasis on campus.
BREAKFAST TO SEE:
Why, sausage, egg and cheese on a Dutch Hollow roll! I would have one every day if my waistline and my cholesterol levels could handle it.
NETFLIX OR AMAZON:
Whatever program my husband watches, LOL. I grew up getting up to change channels on the TV and then went into programming VCRs and digital VCRs. But having a whole world of entertainment at my disposal is more than I can handle.
I haven’t picked up podcasts yet (see that “entire entertainment universe” thing above).
A SKILL YOU WANT TO HAVE:
There are so many choices ! Drawing or painting, playing any musical instrument, woodworking, enjoying going to the gym, to name a few. If I had to absolutely pick one, I would have to play a musical instrument – there is such a rich skill set and knowledge base that would be involved.
BEST PART OF YOUR DAY:
Anytime in the garden.
LITTLE KNOWN FACTS ABOUT YOU:
Just before the pandemic, I started taking pottery lessons. I really enjoy exploring this creative outlet. I have learned enough skills to throw decent coins, although I am not yet good enough to produce a coin intentionally; I just play with clay and hope for the best!
